Walk through the computer aisle of an American electronics chain and the gaming machines are almost all assembled, boxed and warrantied as single units. Self-assembly has become the minority path, and the reasons are commercial rather than technical.
Retailers prefer a single stock unit
A prebuilt desktop is one item with one price, one barcode and one return policy. A build's worth of components is a dozen items whose availability must line up for a customer to leave with anything.
Shelf space in a physical American store is expensive and finite, and a display of individual parts serves far fewer customers per square foot than a row of finished machines.
The economics push toward the assembled box. Component walls survive mainly at specialist retailers whose customers arrive already knowing what they want.
Component makers use prebuilts to move supply
Graphics card and processor manufacturers sell in volume to system builders, who absorb parts steadily rather than in the spikes that retail demand produces. That predictability is valuable to a factory.
When a component is scarce, the builders often continue receiving allocation while individual parts vanish from shelves. Buying a whole machine can become the accessible route to a specific chip.
The result is that supply conditions themselves periodically push American buyers toward prebuilts, independent of what those buyers would otherwise prefer.
Warranty coverage is the strongest selling point
A self-built machine has as many warranties as it has parts, and diagnosing which component failed is the owner's job. Each manufacturer handles its own return separately.
A prebuilt carries one warranty over the whole system, and the seller owns the diagnosis. For a buyer who does not want to become a technician, that transfer of responsibility is the product.
American extended service plans sold alongside these machines extend the same logic further, which is why store staff are trained to attach them at checkout.
Financing works on a single price tag
Store credit offers and installment plans are structured around one transaction, and a gaming desktop's price sits comfortably inside the range those programs target.
A parts list bought over several months cannot be financed as a unit, and buying it all at once removes the main advantage of building gradually.
For younger American buyers without accumulated savings, the payment structure often decides the purchase before any specification comparison happens.
The savings gap narrowed from both directions
Building your own machine once carried a substantial discount because system builders charged heavily for assembly. Competition among builders compressed that margin considerably.
At the same time, builders buy components at volumes an individual cannot match, which offsets part of their labor cost. The remaining premium buys assembly, testing and support.
Self-assembly still wins on part selection and on upgrade paths, which is a real advantage but a narrower one than it used to be.
